  1. A promotional product for audio firm, GGRP, the record jacket transforms into a record player that is manually operated with a pencil. Be sure to take a look at the accompanying 50s-style instructional video, too. Designed by Grey Vancouver. Now, how can I get ahold of one?

Extension.fm is really quite awesome. Once installed, when you view a page (or your dashboard) that contains mp3s, they get added to your library (sortable by blog, artist & album).
Another great feature is that whenever you play an song on a page, it gets played in the plugin (and not the page) meaning you can close that page, or go elsewhere and the song won’t get interrupted (probably my biggest gripe with web-based music).
My only feature request would be shuffle functionality. If you need some fodder to fill your library, stop by ♪.tumblr.com & eplp.

Outasight - Catch Me If You Can

Off Outasight’s free mixtape, Further, in preparation for his near-future full-length, From Here to Eternity. I’ve only recently become aware of this guy, but I’m diggin’ the rap/soul hybrid over gritty, sample-based beats.

Tor & Sufjan Stevens - Star of Wonder / None Shall Pass (ft. Aesop Rock)

From Montreal-based producer Tor’s mashup project, Illinoize, a 7-track album of beats made entirely of samples from Sufjan Stevens’ albums remixed with hip-hop vocals from Aesop Rock, Gift of Gab, Outkast, and others. The whole project sounds so smooth and natural, you’d think it was originally meant to be this way. Both vocal and instrumental versions are available for free download.

Under The Influence is an all Beastie Boys inspired artshow currently showing at Gallery 1988 (7020 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles) until January 29th!

These are great, wish I could see ‘em in-person. (via benjaminf)

  6. Album Artwork

When I set out to write this post, it was intended to simply show off some of the great album packaging and artwork I’ve come across recently. Instead, it turned into a lengthy post about why I prefer to buy physical albums over digital albums and touched on everything from tangibility, pricing differences, iTunes LP, etc.; but, it was straying too far. Maybe I’ll continue it another day, but in short, yes, I still buy more physical albums than I do digital and it’s all because of a love for the artwork. I’m really a vinyl junkie at heart.

This past week I bought two new albums, Brother Ali’s Us and Monsters of Folk’s untitled debut album. Us is a digipak with a glossy coating. The geometric/silhouette-themed artwork all around is fantastic and, on the front, it’s embossed. Inside, the liner notes with lyrics are printed on the backside of a fold-out “poster”.

The Monsters of Folk album is packaged in a heavy cardstock digipak featuring some great illustration and photography work throughout. The booklet includes lyrics to each song and contains more illustrations.

Both really great overall. Oh, and I bought both of these at Best Buy for $9.99 apiece. For me, the convenience of buying digital will never trump owning a physical piece of art, especially when they share the same price point. Spotify may balance out my buying habits when it launches here in the US, but for artists I’m really interested in, I’ll always prefer the real thing.

  7. Apparently, The Black Keys are putting out a hip-hop album on Black Friday under the name BlakRoc. Normally I’d be a little skeptical of this type of thing, but after hearing their last album (produced by Danger Mouse) and watching the trailers for this album, I’m onboard. Listen to “Ain’t Nothing Like You” featuring Mos Def and Jim Jones (who contributes a surprisingly tolerable verse) at Pitchfork.

Felt (Slug & Murs) - “Protagonists” off the upcoming third album from Sluggo and Murs, Felt 3: A Tribute to […]. Much speculation is going on regarding the name of the woman this album will pay tribute to (previous albums were Christina Ricci and Lisa Bonet) on their Facebook page; Wikipedia had listed Sarah Palin, but it has since been removed. The producer of the album, Aesop Rock, was revealed in Murs’ first verse and, apparently, last night during a live show.
